Founded in 1971 as a small independent studio, Nelvana is now one of the world's leading international producers and distributors of children’s animated and live-action content. Nelvana is comprised of Nelvana Studio and its distribution arm, Nelvana Enterprises, and owned by Corus Entertainment. Nelvana Studio is a globally recognized studio that produces a stable of award-winning and globally renowned brands that focus on comedies, preschool and boys action. Nelvana’s content airs on Corus Entertainment’s kids channels in Canada and in over 160 countries around the world. The Nelvana library has well over 3,800 episodes of programming and has received more than 70 major international program awards, including Emmys and Geminis.
In her role as VP and Head of Studio, Irene Weibel serves as Executive Producer of all series in production in the Toronto-based studio. She oversees the production slate and leads and manages the development pipeline on all new series. Nelvana currently has nine series in production, including Mike the Knight ,The Day My Butt Went Psycho and Lucky Duck. The studio has a long history of producing with co-production partners all over the world, including Australia, France, the UK, Japan and many others.
Irene has been with Nelvana for over 10 years and in her current role for two. Previously, she worked for PBS in Illinois, Massachusetts and California. Irene holds a Masters degree in Journalism and a Juris Doctorate. She currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Toronto.
